What is the punishment for rape in Manipur ?
Fine of 25000 INR ($ 263 USD), 8 years imprisonment with recommended compensation of 500000 INR ($ 5256 USD) to the victim.
Who committed the rape ?
45 year old married man from Moirang Khunou. Yes wife is still alive. Yes he is a father of two young kids studying in 10th grade.
How long did the punishment take ?
One year two months. Father of the victim lodged the complain on 19th July 2015. Maibam Manojkumar session Judge of Imphal East announced the sentence under section 376 IPC on 30th April 2016.
Should we be celebrating that there is justice provided in the land where not much justice are seen? Was there support for the victim? Did the victim get the compensation ? It has to be noted that the compensation was a recommendation. It cannot be enforced.
What about the wife and young children of the convict ? How must they be living – their father was the sole bread earner of the family.
